Hillyer, Mrs. John Freeman account of a trip to Texas, 1848-1849.

The collection consists of a 3 page typescript. (Note on top of first page: "Written in ink and copied by her great-granddaughter, Lorena Hillyer Fox.") It consists of an account (evidently taken from a diary) of a trip to Texas made in 1847-1849 by the Hillyer family, who lived for a while in Galveston, then moved to Goliad. Mr. Hillyer was a preacher. They took with them, or as she expressed it, "set off for this new country accompanied only by our children [5 of them]... eleven servants of different ages... piano, clothing... bedding... seraphine violin and flute..."

John Freeman Hillyer was the eldest son of Petersburg merchant Shaler Hillyer and his wife, Rebecca Freeman Hillyer. An alumni of the University of Georgia, he became a Baptist preacher and educator who moved from Georgia to Texas in 1847 and resided there until his death in 1894. During his time in Texas he was Chaplain of the House of Representatives, Texas legislature and President of Gonzales College. He married (1) Mary Briscoe, and (2) Mrs. Dora Storey.
